Women\u2019s football will still benefit from investment worth $1bn (\u00a3804m) despite the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic, says Fifa.
Covid-19 has caused football across all levels to be halted in most of the world\u2019s countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the funding for the women\u2019s game, which covers 2019-2022 will not be cut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A spokesperson for football\u2019s world governing body said: \u201cThis funding has already been committed by Fifa and will not be impacted by the current crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The statement added: \u201cThis funding will be invested into a range of areas in the women\u2019s game including competitions, capacity building, development programmes, governance and leadership, professionalisation and technical programmes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The package, announced last year, doubled Fifa\u2019s investment and came from the association\u2019s cash reserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The women\u2019s game is enjoying a surge in popularity with last year\u2019s Women\u2019s World Cup watched by record-breaking 1.12bn viewers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fifa also confirmed that the women\u2019s game would be part of any package to help the sport cope with losses incurred due to coronavirus.
\u201cWomen\u2019s football is being fully considered as part of this process in order to understand the various needs and impact on stakeholders within the women\u2019s game,\u201d the spokesperson added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFifa is currently working on possibilities to provide assistance to the football community around the world, including women\u2019s football. The exact format and details of this assistance are currently being discussed in consultation with Fifa\u2019s member associations, the confederations and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
