{"id":3068,"date":"2019-09-25T21:08:47","date_gmt":"2019-09-25T21:08:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/westernmirror.com\/?p=3068"},"modified":"2019-09-25T21:08:49","modified_gmt":"2019-09-25T21:08:49","slug":"deadly-confrontation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/westernmirror.com\/?p=3068","title":{"rendered":"Deadly confrontation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Alleged gunman killed; cop injured\u00a0<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Barrington Flemming<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; <em>Staff Reporter<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A teenager is dead\nand a police constable hospitalized in serious condition following\nconfrontations between gunmen and the police in Montego Bay, St. James.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incidents took place on Sunday and Monday of this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest confrontation occurred on Monday afternoon when\n19year-old Akeem Fray of Hugga Lane, Norwood, was shot dead by the police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Information gleaned by the <strong>Western Mirror<\/strong> is that\nabout 3:20p.m., members of the security forces were on patrol at Hugga Lane\nwhen they saw a group of men acting in a suspicious manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On seeing the police approaching, the men ran, and the\npolice gave chase. Fray, who was among them, was seen allegedly removing a\nfirearm from his waistband. He and another man who was also armed with a gun\nreportedly opened fire at the police. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gunfire was returned. When shooting subsided, Fray was\nseen suffering from gunshot wounds and was taken to the Cornwall Regional\nHospital, where he was pronounced dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Smith and Wesson 9 MM pistol with seven 9 millimetre\nrounds were also seized by the lawmen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The killing has prompted a probe by the Independent\nCommission of Investigations, INDECOM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>COP INJURED<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monday\u2019s incident came on the heels of a shooting on Sunday\ninvolving a police constable and armed men following a minor motor vehicle\naccident along the Porto Bello main road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reports are that at 2:45 a.m., the police constable and a\nfemale companion were travelling in his grey Toyota motorcar along the Porto\nBello main road when a green Toyota Corolla Station Wagon attempted to overtake\nhis car, damaging the right rear fender of his vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;The constable,\nrealizing that his vehicle was damaged, reportedly drove down the vehicle and\nused his car to block the roadway; however, the driver of the green Toyota\nCorolla managed to elude him and drove away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The constable reportedly drove to the intersection of Porto\nBello and Sign Irwin where he stopped and was further examining the damage to\nthe vehicle when he saw the same Green Toyota Corolla driving towards him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;He allegedly\napproached the vehicle and shouted \u2018police\u2019, when a man who was later\nidentified as Travis Malcolm, alias \u2018Tippa\u2019, who was a passenger in the\nvehicle, opened fire, hitting him in the chest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The constable drew his firearm and discharged a round, but\nthe car sped off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The constable was later taken to hospital where he has been\nadmitted in serious condition.&nbsp; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alleged gunman killed; cop injured\u00a0 Barrington Flemming &#8211; Staff Reporter A teenager is dead and a police constable hospitalized in serious condition following confrontations between gunmen and the police in Montego Bay, St. James.
