{"id":3053,"date":"2019-09-23T21:45:41","date_gmt":"2019-09-23T21:45:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/westernmirror.com\/?p=3053"},"modified":"2019-09-23T21:45:44","modified_gmt":"2019-09-23T21:45:44","slug":"health-crisis-looms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/westernmirror.com\/?p=3053","title":{"rendered":"Health crisis looms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Basic school under threat<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Michael\nNattoo\/Alan Lewin<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Residents of the\ncommunity of Felicity, Montego Bay, led by Principal of the Albion Basic\nSchool, Calmin Pinnock, are calling on the authorities to address a vexing\nsituation in that community relating to the wanton disposal of garbage, which\nincludes dead animals, in close proximity to the school\u2019s grounds.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview with the <strong>Western Mirror<\/strong>, Principal\nPinnock highlighted what she said was a growing a problem which involves some\nresidents dumping their garbage near the gate of the school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In further expressing her disgust, Pinnock revealed that\ncloser inspection of the makeshift dump site just in front of the school also\nrevealed garbage-covered carcasses of animals from the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI had to close the school for three days because someone\ndumped the body of a dead dog in the receptacle,\u201d Pinnock explained, citing\nthat students and administrators found it extremely difficult to focus under\nsuch circumstances. The receptacle, she added, was recently constructed by\nCouncillor for the Glendevon Division, Leroy Williams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis receptacle is for the school only. It was built last\nyear by Councillor Leroy Williams to accommodate the school refuse, but people\nfrom all over are coming to dispose of their garbage in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the case of the dead dog, the stench was so unbearable\nthat it was a parent who had to come and remove and burn it so that school\ncould resume,\u201d she relayed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She continued: \u201cThis is certainly not good for us,\nespecially the children.\u201d The improper garbage disposal has also seen an\nincrease in rodents in the area, and with the school being mere metres away\nfrom the dumpsite, it may not be long before they make their way to the inner\nparts of the school, and in direct contact with students and administrators. It\nis for those reasons why Pinnock is pleading with the authorities. \u201cWe are\nlooking at a potential health crisis developing here, so we need the relevant\nauthorities to move in and take charge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CONDITIONS RIPE FOR\nDENGUE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The health hazards do no stop there. Opposite the pedestrian\ncrossing and next to the school gate, a hole filled with stagnant, murky waters\nhas become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, and with a Dengue outbreak being experienced\nin certain parts of the parish, Pinnock needs that situation to be addressed\nimmediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, according to Principal Pinnock, \u201cThere is no\nsidewalk for the children to walk on. They have to walk in the street as a\nresult and that\u2019s dangerous, as cars could hit them one day. I am calling on\nthe Member of Parliament, Dr. Horace Chang, to look into the matter and speed\nup the process involving adding sidewalks in the area. Many children travel to\nand from school, and they could use those.
