{"id":2889,"date":"2019-09-09T18:13:50","date_gmt":"2019-09-09T18:13:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/westernmirror.com\/?p=2889"},"modified":"2019-09-09T20:05:24","modified_gmt":"2019-09-09T20:05:24","slug":"rose-heights-tense","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/westernmirror.com\/?p=2889","title":{"rendered":"Rose Heights tense"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Controversial police killings spark protest<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Barrington Flemming <\/strong><\/em>&#8211; <em>Staff Reporter<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Despite the\nIndependent Commission of Investigation, INDECOM, launching a probe into\nThursday\u2019s fatal shooting by the police of two young men in Rose Heights,\nMontego Bay, the situation remains tense in the area today, as residents\ncontinue to discount the police\u2019s report of the incident, charging that the two\nyoung men are innocent and were killed in cold blood.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Residents took to the streets in the aftermath, venting their anger, calling for justice for the 20-year-old and 22-year-old who they say were no wrong doers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"http:\/\/westernmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG-20190906-WA0009.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2894\" srcset=\"https:\/\/westernmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG-20190906-WA0009.jpg 500w, https:\/\/westernmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG-20190906-WA0009-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption><em>Residents gather in the community<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sterling\u2019s mother argued that he was not involved in any\nwrongdoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy son was not involved in anything wrong. I don\u2019t know of\nit,\u201d she said.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One very vocal resident said: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe police dem come and run wi off the road and rise up dem\nbig gun and shoot up di place and kill Oshane. Him nuh inna no\nwrongdoing.\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, a very terse report from the police indicates that Sterling and another man, later identified as Byfield, were shot during a confrontation with the police and one 9mm Browning pistol with a magazine containing two 9mm cartridges was seized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"285\" height=\"306\" src=\"http:\/\/westernmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG-20190906-WA0004.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"2891\" data-link=\"http:\/\/westernmirror.com\/?attachment_id=2891\" class=\"wp-image-2891\" srcset=\"https:\/\/westernmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG-20190906-WA0004.jpg 285w, https:\/\/westernmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG-20190906-WA0004-279x300.jpg 279w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 285px) 100vw, 285px\" \/><figcaption>Oshane Sterling<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"491\" height=\"700\" src=\"http:\/\/westernmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG-20190906-WA0002-491x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"2890\" data-link=\"http:\/\/westernmirror.com\/?attachment_id=2890\" class=\"wp-image-2890\" srcset=\"https:\/\/westernmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG-20190906-WA0002-491x700.jpg 491w, https:\/\/westernmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG-20190906-WA0002-210x300.jpg 210w, https:\/\/westernmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG-20190906-WA0002-295x420.jpg 295w, https:\/\/westernmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG-20190906-WA0002.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><figcaption>Christopher Byfield<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The residents shot down that account arguing that it was the\npolice who went to their vehicle and fetched the gun which they then planted at\nthe scene and subsequently claimed that they had seized it from the two young\nmen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the three weapons used in the shooting death of\nSterling and Byfield have been seized and sent off to the government\u2019s forensic\nlaboratory for testing and the three police officers involved will be\ninterviewed by the Independent Commission of Investigation, INDECOM, who have\nlaunched a probe into the incident. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Errol Chattoo, Director of Complaints of INDECOM\u2019s Western\nRegion, told the Western Mirror\nthat they are now appealing for the testimonies of eye witnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe weapons have been collected and sent to the\ngovernment\u2019s forensic laboratory for ballistic testing along with any forensic\nmaterial found on the scene\u201d, Chattoo explained.&nbsp; \u201cWe are now appealing for residents who have\nseen anything to come forward and tell us what they know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chattoo, in the meantime, said they are awaiting the results\nof the post mortem examination to further inform their investigation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Controversial police killings spark protest Barrington Flemming &#8211;
