{"id":2831,"date":"2019-08-26T17:58:45","date_gmt":"2019-08-26T17:58:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/westernmirror.com\/?p=2831"},"modified":"2019-08-26T17:58:48","modified_gmt":"2019-08-26T17:58:48","slug":"dying-to-breathe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/westernmirror.com\/?p=2831","title":{"rendered":"Dying to breathe"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Lung disease patient desperate for help<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Barrington Flemming<\/strong> &#8211; Staff Reporter<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>For the past three\nyears, life for 29-year-old former sales clerk, Anna Kay Campbell, has been a\nseries of tragedies, one behind the other. From being immediately struck with\nInterstitial Lung Disease following the sudden death of her mother to\nthereafter developing diabetes as a side effect of some medications, Campbell\u2019s\nlife has been tough, and she now desperately needs help.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A resident of Ramble, Hanover, Anna Kay explained to the <strong>Western Mirror<\/strong> that after her mother died three years ago, she fell ill, and realized that she started having difficulties breathing. She was subsequently taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital for diagnosis and treatment, where she first learnt of what had been affecting her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe doctors did a CT scan on my chest and told me that my\nlungs were failing because I had developed lung disease. I now have\nInterstitial Lung Disease and I have to receive my oxygen daily. I take\nPrednisone and Zantac, and water tablets to reduce fluid around my lungs,\u201d\nCampbell explained. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Campbell, diligently taking her medications to ease the\ndiscomforts associated with her disease, developed diabetes as a result of one\nof her medications \u2013 Prednisone. The drug essentially primes the body for times\nof challenge by, among other things, increasing blood glucose levels. Extended\nuse of the drug, however, can cause diabetes, which is what happened in\nCampbell\u2019s case. As a result, she now has to get treatment for both her disease\nand diabetes \u2013 making things especially difficult for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Campbell now has to constantly wear a mask. \u201cIt is very\ndifficult for me; I cannot take off the mask. I have to wear it all the time,\nexcept for a brief moment when I go to the bathroom. I put it back on right\nafter. I have cold in my chest, but the medication does not seem to be working\nand I have to be careful with my diet too because of the diabetes. The mask is\nattached to an oxygen tank, which I have to travel with for any emergency,\u201d she\nexplained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After spending a year at the Savanna-la-Mar General Hospital\nfor treatment, she was discharged in June of this year. Now, Campbell is a\n\u2018residential\u2019 patient at the Cornwall Regional Hospital, after previously\nliving with her sister, and her mother, before she died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI went back to live with my sister but her husband said I\ncould not stay there with my condition, and since I had nowhere else to go, I\nended up at the Cornwall Regional Hospital. I have other relatives, some in\nWestern Jamaica, some in Mandeville, but they all say they cannot accommodate\nme; they do not have any space\u201d, she lamented. That\u2019s why, Campbell said, she\u2019s\nbeen described as a \u2018residential patient\u2019, having no other option but stay at\nthe problem-riddled hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former sales clerk, who worked at a wholesale, shared,\nhowever, that a relative in Haughton Grove, Hanover, recently offered her a\nliving space, but she needs all the help she can get to build a room for\nherself.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A resident of Ramble, Hanover, Anna Kay explained to the Western Mirror that after her mother died three years ago, she fell ill, and realized that she started having difficulties breathing.
