{"id":2451,"date":"2019-06-24T20:14:19","date_gmt":"2019-06-24T20:14:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/westernmirror.com\/?p=2451"},"modified":"2019-06-24T20:14:21","modified_gmt":"2019-06-24T20:14:21","slug":"more-students-benefit-from-hanover-charities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/westernmirror.com\/?p=2451","title":{"rendered":"More students benefit from Hanover Charities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Shamir Brown<\/strong> &#8211; Correspondent<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hanover Charities has provided a big boost for the educational pursuits of a number of students in the parish. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year, 191 students have been provided with\nscholarships, totaling 24 million dollars. The funds were provided to assist\nrecipients with their educational pursuits. The number of recipients is up from\n125 students in previous years. This was revealed by Katrin Casserly, chair of\nthe Hanover Charities, as she gave her report at their annual grant ceremony\nheld last Thursday at the Round Hill Hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the support of a number of donors and the earnings\nfrom their annual Sugar Cane Ball that was held earlier this year, the\norganization was able to make a number of donations to students in Hanover and\nits environs. The students &#8211; who are both repeat beneficiaries and new ones\n-were able to collect scholarships in various amounts to assist in their\nschooling, both local and overseas. She related that it was a hard task to decide\nwho should receive the scholarships after getting a number of applications to\nchoose from. It was revealed that over the last five years, over US $500,000.00\nhas been disbursed in support of students who are seeking to achieve their\neducational goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, while she noted that the charity will seek to\ncontinue to support more students in a similar fashion in the coming years, she\ncalled on the recipients of grants for this year and also past recipients to\nbecome donors for a cause, whether it is in the form service or cash.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She further highlighted that the students are part of a\nlarger scheme of giving that will see over 61 million dollars being disbursed\nto not only students, but to various organizations that Hanover Charities has\npledged to assist. One of the benefitting organizations will be the Green\nIsland Primary School, who, through a joint initiative, will see the erection\nof a new multipurpose hall and classrooms to accommodate the growth of the\ninstitution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Patrick Prendergast, who was guest speaker at the\nfunction, also lauded the efforts of Hanover Charities for empowering the\nstudents and other beneficiaries through this act of giving. Though small in\nsize, he related that the charity has done so much in giving to the needy, especially\nto students who do not have the opportunity to pay their tuitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, he called on the recipients to pay it forward. \u201cWe\nmust not only show gratitude today; we must also be prepared to fully embrace\nthe responsibility that comes with being a beneficiary of this noble charity.\nOne such responsibility is to give back. In the contemporary world, they call\nit pay it forward.
