Despite a raft of\ndevelopment projects in Falmouth in recent months, Delroy Christie, President\nof the Trelawny Chamber of Commerce and Industry, is calling on the authorities\nto move quickly to address what he says are serious deficiencies in the growing\ntown.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Christie says there are serious and chronic problems\naffecting the town including an urgent need for a central sewage system,\nregularized garbage collection and disposal, need for parking, major traffic\ncongestion and lack of adequate drains. <\/p>\n\n\n\n He outlined the problems while speaking in an interview with\nthe Western Mirror, arguing that the town is reeling from a chronic lack of\nsupporting infrastructure to complement the development projects. .<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe have a chronic need for a central sewage system; it is\nurgent. The problem is that the water table rises everyday in that part of the\nparish and everything is old pits and those things don\u2019t function anymore. So\nas soon as we have heavy rains, there is raw sewage on the road. It\u2019s as bad as\nthat,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Christie explained that Falmouth is a very flat town that is\njust a few feet above sea level and with the new developments taking place; the\ndrains have become overwhelmed with the volume of water now flowing in them, so\ndrainage is a major problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n FLOODING<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDevelopment is now outpacing the infrastructure, which\naffects the drains which are no longer able to manage the volume of water now\nflowing in the town, especially when it rains heavily,\u201d Christie\nexplained. \u201cSo flooding remains a\nperennial problem\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Chamber president said another pressing issue is a lack\nof proper parking and congestion in the town. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFalmouth is an old English town, which was constructed with\nvery narrow roads for horse and buggy and things have not changed, so you can\u2019t have vehicles parking on the\nstreets and people walking on the same strip back and forth.
