{"id":2134,"date":"2019-02-06T18:07:56","date_gmt":"2019-02-06T18:07:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/westernmirror.com\/?p=2134"},"modified":"2019-02-06T22:45:05","modified_gmt":"2019-02-06T22:45:05","slug":"shock-and-anger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/westernmirror.com\/?p=2134","title":{"rendered":"Shock and anger"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>Attorney\u2019s body taken from sinkhole<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>Colleagues blast authorities<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Barrington Flemming\/Shamir Brown<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>With mystery still\nshrouding the gruesome slaying of noted Trelawny attorney, 65-year-old William\nHines, affectionately called \u2018Baldy\u2019, whose decomposing body was retrieved from\na 40-foot-deep sink hole on his farm at Orange Valley district on the border of\nTrelawny and St. James on Sunday, colleagues have responded with shock and\nanger at the authorities, arguing that enough resources were not committed to\nsearch for him since he went missing on January 6.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hines\u2019 body, with hands and feet bound, was discovered after\na community member stumbled upon a number of objects and blood stains, which\npointed to the hole in which his body was dumped. A search party comprising the\npolice, firefighters, family members and colleagues returned to the site on\nSunday after attempts to retrieve the body on Saturday were hampered by a lack\nof equipment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Khadine Colman, one attorney-at-law who was among those at the scene, while expressing profound sadness at the brutal way in which Hines met his end, lambasted the authorities, citing that not enough money and resources were committed to the search, which took a month to locate Hines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"http:\/\/westernmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Hines.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"2146\" data-link=\"http:\/\/westernmirror.com\/?attachment_id=2146\" class=\"wp-image-2146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/westernmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Hines.jpg 500w, https:\/\/westernmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Hines-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/westernmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Hines-45x35.jpg 45w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption><em><strong>William Hines<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are deeply saddened and extremely upset about the loss\nof our colleague and we are disturbed by the length of time it took to find him\nand for us to even get to this point. We know that his soul cannot rest in\npeace until his killer or killers are found,\u201d the attorney said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She pointed to a lack of resources granted to the police and\nthe fire service, citing that this was caused by misplaced priorities by the\ngovernment, as the search and retrieval of Hines\u2019 body had to be curtailed on\nSaturday when an ambulance at the scene and other equipment had to be diverted\nto an accident scene along the Rose Hall main road. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am told that there are plans afoot to spend 1 billion\ndollars to undertake a beach project in Montego Bay, I am not against\nrecreational activities for persons to socialize; but how can we utilize\nresources to spend on recreational facilities when we do not have resources to\neffectively man a crime scene?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hines was described by his colleagues, as a strident\nadvocate for rehabilitation of wrongdoers, and one of his colleagues bemoaned\nthe fact that while he practiced criminal law, it may have been persons whom he\nwould have represented in the court who ended his life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The noted attorney, who practiced law in Kingston for a\nnumber of years, was originally from Comfort Hall in Trelawny and an avid lover\nof farming, and had returned to Trelawny and bought a piece of land in a\nneighbouring community to raise cattle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of Hines\u2019 sisters remembers him fondly as a loving, kind\nand supportive person. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe last time we spoke was during the holidays when we\nshared good tidings for the New Year. But it did not materialize for him as his\nlife ended abruptly.&nbsp; He was very much\ninto farming and would come down from Kingston every weekend to look after his\nlivestock. This is very difficult for us as a family.
