UNSIGHTLY FINISH – Cornwall College and Frome embroiled in melee

Cornwall College and Frome Technical players embroiled in an all-out brawl that marred their encounter in the ISSA da’Costa Cup Round of 16 match played yesterday at Cornwall College. The referee showed 8 red cards.

Violence again indiscipline again reared its ugly head as the ISSA da’Costa Cup quarter final round encounter between Cornwall College and Frome Technical descended into chaos during their much-anticipated group 1 showdown at Cornwall College yesterday (Thursday, November 5).

Eight red cards were flashed, three for Cornwall College and four going the way of Frome Tech, however the hosts and 12 times champions Cornwall College eased their way into the round of eight of the competition with a bullish 3-0 whipping for their out of parish rivals.
Cornwall College ended the match with eight players while Frome fielded seven for the closing five minutes.

Captain Carlyle Tinglin, Shaheem Bernard and substitute Jevaughn Campbell were the players given marching orders for Cornwall College while for Frome Tessaney Rankine was the first player to be sent off before the disruption, Tavar Cox, Marquez Dunn, Romario Clarke and Demarcus Foster were the players ejected for Frome Tech.

During the on field scuffle, spectators were sent scurrying for cover as bottles filled with water and drinks rained down from the grand stand.

In the brutal contest, with elbows, fists, ankle kicks and cheeky fouls dominating, Cornwall College were on the front foot from the get go and went ahead through their opponents early own goal.

Demarco Finnikin then doubled the advantage, banging in from close range after Frome Technical failed to clear their lines while Shakeem Gibson with an easy tap in on the stroke of the hour mark, sealed the win for the Leacroft Lettman unit.
National youth representative Carlondo Morris, in his final game before leaving for the Under-17 World Cup, failed to get on the scoresheet, but had an impact that includes a left foot effort which crashed against the upright.

Lettman despite being satisfied with advancing into the next round was left disappointed with how the game ended… “Our young men have to learn discipline; these things cannot be allowed to continue in the sport (football) These are the young men of the future some are expected to carry on as professionals in the sports and they cannot continue like this, we have to stop it”, a disgruntled Lettman declared.
